Rev. Samuel Geroy Medical Update 9/18/10

Dear family and friends,
God has sustained us over the past few days since Pastor Geroy suffered a stroke.  Our friends, brethren and family have been supporting us in prayers and various ways. Here is a background of the events.
Pastor Geroy went to Bukidnon on 13 September for a 4-day modular course on Church Administration at the Bukidnon Fundamental Baptist Seminary, Malaybalay City. On Wednesday, 15 September, 3:30 AM, he experienced severe headache and vomiting and was immediately brought to Bethel Baptist Hospital in Malaybalay. He became drowsy and slept most of the time. CT scan results a few hours after showed bleed on the left side of his brain. On 17 September, he was transferred to Cebu City after a 2 hour ambulance ride from Malaybalay to Cagayan de Oro and a 8-hour boat ride to Cebu.  He was admitted at the ICU of the Perpetual Succour Hospital in Cebu City.  His recovery has been progressive – blood pressure was controlled through medications and he is now conscious and conversant. We are already discussing with him what happened over the last three days and where he is. Cerebral angiogram on 18 September showed negative for aneurysms or other malformations. Final diagnosis is hypertensive bleed and only medicines are needed for recovery.

Looking back, we praise the Lord for His faithfulness and grace to Pastor Geroy, his family and everyone who have provided support.
·         There is joy in serving Jesus. Pastor Geroy has been very busy over the past few months; previous weeks were spent in Negros and Cebu before he went to Bukidnon. Activities, plans and new possibilities in service are lined up. He was very excited and his family and the churches are providing full support for these endeavors. These may have stressed his body and mind. Yet God works through our weaknesses to fulfill His will.
·         I would be true, for there are those who trust me… I would be strong for there is much to suffer. Pastor Geroy had Burghers Disease in his 20’s. This disease only occurs among smokers and he never smoked. It must have been his hectic schedule as a young pastor that brought about this condition. Since then, he limited his diet to mostly vegetable and fish (and no pork). This discipline must have sustained his health in spite of his schedules and responsibilities in the churches where he has worked.
·         I know God makes no mistakes… He leads in every path I take. When the event happened, his eldest son (a doctor) was also in Malaybalay for a short visit. This facilitated quick decisions and management. Onset of symptom and transportation to the hospital from the seminary was also immediate.
·         I must tell Jesus all of my troublesJesus can help me, Jesus alone. Fervent prayer and faith guided each step of the way – decisions in diagnostic options, travels to and from Mindanao, changes in directions and financial management. Even while waiting for assessment, diagnostic test results, expert opinion and progress in recovery, our only option was to trust in God.
·         We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord… Yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love. Our brethren and friends in Bethel Baptist Hospital, Bukidnon Fundamental Baptist Seminary, Bethel Baptist Church, Malaybalay City government, Grace Baptist Church (Cebu and Mandaue) and Calvary Baptist Church (Pontevedra) extended prayers and support in various ways. People showed their love to the Geroy family by accompanying them in the hospital, helping in the decisions, coordinating with transportation arrangements and medical and financial assistance. We are also grateful to countless other friends who offered prayers from different parts of the country and in many parts of the world. The unity of believers in faith, deeds and prayer is indeed a blessing.
We ask you to continue to pray for his speedy recovery – that his blood pressure return to normal through medicines and other modalities, that he regain his full functions especially in mental capacity and memory and that the needs will be met.
The recent experiences in Pastor Geroy’s life remind us of God’s omnipotence and His promises.
“In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame….
For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth….
Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God,
Till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come….
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again;
From the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.
You will increase my honor and comfort me once again.”
(Excerpt from Psalm 71)

Thank you very much!  To God be the glory!
